Pink Ribbons, Inc. - Capitalizing on Hope -
Pink Ribbons, Inc. looks at the pervasive impact of breast cancer fundraising. Where does all the money go, and what is actually achieved? The film offers a completely different take on the pink ribbon “success” story that has overtaken North America.
Pink Ribbons, Inc. is a feature length documentary produced by the National Film Board of Canada and directed by award-winning, Canadian filmmaker Léa Pool. The film is inspired by a book of the same name by Professor Samantha King of Queens University.

THE ESPLANADE ARTS & HERITAGE CENTRE
Until February 12, 2012
THE ESPLANADE ART GALLERY
Soft Geometry: The Quilts of Judith Tinkl
This Ontario artist brings four decades of skill, experience and exploration to her textile art works, which are extraordinary in their complex geometry, subtle patterns and intricate detail. Judith Tinkl’s work is inspired by natural structures and patterns, by geometry (most recently of Roger Penrose), by Islamic patterning, the quilts of African-Americans, and modern artists who explore colour mixing and composition.
Retired from the faculty of the Ontario College of Art + Design, Tinkl’s work was selected for the “Unity and Diversity” exhibition at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale in Korea in 2009, and has been presented in solo and group exhibitions in Canada, Japan, Australia, France, Britain and the United States. A past Chair of the Ontario Craft Council, she has received the Ontario Premier’s Award and the Joan Chalmers Award for Quiltmaking.
Closing Reception Sunday February 5th at 1pm in the Art Gallery with Judith Tinkl
“First Discoveries” family program at 2:00pm in the Discovery Centre
Out of the Vaults: Medicine Hat’s Heritage Quilts
These remarkable quilts are safeguarded for posterity in the Esplanade Museum Collection. All were used and loved here in Medicine Hat, from as early as 1910 onwards. The provenance of the quilts is sparse but intriguing - we know for instance that one is the tulip design quilt of Miss Jean MacGregor, Medicine Hat’s first woman RCMP dispatcher, and another patchwork quilt was started in Huron County, Ontario and finished in Medicine Hat with WW 1 and other commemorative badges. This is a rare opportunity to see unique pieces of Medicine Hat history brought to life by the skill, creativity and countless hours of dedication of their makers.
Spotlight on Art Quilts by Fran Lauzon
Fran Lauzon is a Medicine Hat painter and award-winning fibre artist who has been involved in the visual arts for over 30 years. Fran’s quilts are extraordinary in the complexity of their composition, brilliant use of colour and attention to detail: they are powerful when viewed from a distance and reveal subtle intricacies when examined closely.
Fran uses original paintings and photographs as the basis for her quilts; inspiration comes from “the prairie, animals, the river, coulees, and objects around me… Above all I am interested in the drama of the local area and feel satisfied when a piece is full of light and colour and depicts my response to my home.” Fran Lauzon, artist statement.
Esplanauts Winter Art Classes 2012

The classes will tie into Soft Geometry, Judith Tinkl’s exhibition of her quilts in the Art Gallery, Medicine Hat’s Heritage Quilts exhibition Out of the Vaults, and Spotlight on Art Quilts by Fran Lauzon.

TREX EXHIBITION FOR JANUARY 2012
Medicine Hat Public Library hosts:
Another 75 Million-Ashes
Adrian Stimson has created drawings of both realistic representations and imagined petroglyph styled stories of the great bison saga of North America. The historical slaughter of the bison was a part of the decimation of First Nations in the Americas, a deliberate and brutal attempt to destroy not only their bison but also their people who relied on the bison for sustenance. It is Adrian’s desire to honor the memory of the bison and its resilience.
Medicine Hat College hosts:
Derek Besant: A Loss for Words
Besant is inspired by his passion for comic book artists, metal-plate engravers and illustrators of elementary grammar books who render line expertly. This series also reflects his ongoing interest in botany, ornithology, human anatomy, architecture and illustrated technical manuals.
For more information on these programs or any other exhibitions around Southeastern Alberta please visit www.trexprogramsoutheast.ca. |
